  Common Causes of Laptop Problems... Hints and Tips.


Crashing.

When a Laptop crashes or halts and switches itself off , this fault is caused by a number of different reasons. 

The main enemy of a laptop is HEAT. If you use your laptop for extended periods of time, it may be an idea to get a cooling mat (available from most computer shops) 

Another cause of overheating is blocked / clogged up cooling fans etc. An hour of time spent with an experienced PC technician who can perform a full service will certainly get your laptop back to normal in no time.

One could be the physical memory or ram on the motherboard . If you take out your ram and replace it with another chip running at the same speed this may fix the error. However there are other reasons for crashes. One is the dreaded blue screen often called the blue screen of death. This blue screen has terrified many I.T techies , not because it is a severe problem but mainly because there are so many reasons why you get a blue screen. It could just be that the software i.e. windows is not installed correctly or it could be that your windows cd is scratched when you are installing it. It could mean you have a virus. It could be your memory (RAM) . Maybe your hard drive has had its day. The list goes on. The usual scenario is to work it out by the golden rule...

Is this caused by  hardware or software? Consider re-installing windows with a good CD. If after windows is installed and you still get the blue screen then its the hardware. Swap out the physical memory replace it with a new chip . 

Did this work? If not maybe your hard drive has a problem. If your partitioning the disk always do a slow format. Using the quick format of ntfs often does not remove viruses. It could be that all your drivers are not installed correctly check your graphics card is seated correctly and check that all drivers are installed in device manager .

Common Laptop  Faults We Can Help With . . .
Laptop screens can fail in many ways; the screen may be cracked, smashed or leaking 'ink', it may show lines, random characters, white or black dots or show a very dark ghost image. Cracks may be caused by accident, or sometimes when the lid is opened quickly against stiff hinges. If the screen shows any signs of physical damage, including loosing 'ink', then it must be replaced; it cannot be economically repaired.

If the screen shows lines, dots or random characters then the fault may be either caused by a faulty screen, motherboard fault or defective cable where it passes through the laptop hinge.

Laptop Screen Replacement looks deceptively easy from pictures and You Tube Videos, but it is a skilled job requiring experience and care, as there is very little room inside the laptop and you need the right tools; this is definitely NOT a DIY job!

Power connector failure / Broken power sockets are one of the most common laptop faults and may show one or more of these symptoms:-

1. Wiggling the power connector may cause the charging light to come on briefly or only when the connector is wedged at an angle.
2. The charging light may not illuminate no matter what angle the connector is moved to.
3. The battery may discharge when the laptop is turned on but charge ok when its off.
4. A burning smell may be noticed when the laptop is powered on or when charging from the mains.
5. You may notice that the power connector is hot when you remove the plug.

The power connector used on most laptops is of very poor design as the strain of insertion and movement is taken by a few solder joints on the connector where it joins the motherboard, thus failure occurs due to metal fatigue of the solder joints. Complete failure may not occur this is why wiggling the connector can often cause the laptop to start charging again, however, it can equally cause the connection to heat up and burn.

We does not usually use the manufacturers original power connector for repairs as it will often fail again in 1 - 2 months. We use a new power connector and secure it in place with hot glue. Therefore it does not matter how you wiggle the connector it will not fracture where it connects to the motherboard.

We can usually repair the motherboard if it has burnt around the power connector, so don't worry if it failed with a burning smell.

Sometimes it is necessary to replace the power plug on the end of the power supply, we will usually do this free when we replace the connector.

Laptop motherboard repairs / replacements

We have much experience in repairing laptop motherboards and can usually identify and replace the defective component.

It is considerably cheaper to repair a motherboard rather than replace it, as a repair would usually cost £50 - £150, whereas a new motherboard would usually cost £200 - £800.(Alienware laptop motherboards are notoriously expensive)

We also specialise in repairing a known overheating problem with HP Pavillion DV2000 HP Pavillion DV9000, DV9500 and DV6000. Nvidia graphics chips are very prone to overheating, producing a corrupt display, a white screen or simply turning on for 2 seconds then powering off. Many other makes of laptops which also have the Nvidia graphics chip are also prone to overheating and need to be modified. We can reflow / reball your laptop`s nvidia graphic chip and perforrm a much needed modification to stop the laptop overheating in the first place-  a much cheaper option than replacing the laptop!  We are repair specialist for HP / Compaq laptops in the north east and have many years experience.

Keyboard and mouse pad faults do not usually occur unless the keyboard has been abused with excessive force or fluid has been spilt between the keys. The usual symptom is one or more keys do not work or require excessive force. The only fix is to replace the keyboard. Occasionally motherboard faults develop that prevents the keyboard from working.

The price of almost every make and model is different so we need full details. Mouse pads often fail or become 'sluggish' and may need replacement.

Drink spills will severely damage your laptop and often results in major use of bad language. If you have an accident immediately remove the battery/power lead and invert the laptop to remove as much fluid as possible. DO NOT TURN ON THE LAPTOP!! 
It is human nature to be curious and "just see if it works" - STOP RIGHT THERE!

Call us immediately to us so we can take it to pieces and investigate where the liquid has gone. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you DO NOT turn on the laptop or it will very likely be damaged beyond repair; it may work for 5 minutes but the fluid and electricity will severely corrode the motherboard making it irreparable.

Laptop DVD/CD ROM drive faults occur very frequently. Great care must be taken when inserting/ejecting the media as often the tray rails become bent or the optics are damaged. If this has happened the unit must be replaced. An exact replacement is necessary as the front facie must match. Sometimes the connector from the drive to the motherboard fractures, so the fault is not always the drive.

We can quickly repair both types of fault.
Laptop Hard drive faults occur quiet frequently, especially if the laptop has been banged or dropped whilst turned on. The first you may notice is that Windows will not power up properly or there are frequent software crashes. Often errors can be corrected but it may be necessary to install a new drive and either copy data or reinstall Windows.

Another big reason for laptop hard drive failer is heat. This often happens when a laptop has not been serviced and the cooling fans become choked with fluf etc. Again we can help you with this.
Viruses, Trojans & Adware or damaged Windows almost always cause the laptop to run slow with frequent crashes. We can either remove them or reformat the complete laptop by reinstalling Windows. By reformatting the drive all data will be lost but the laptop should become as fast as it was when first purchased. We are additionally able to copy say My Documents etc before reformatting so some of the data can be recovered.

We can reinstall Windows back onto your laptop even if you have lost all your setup disks providing the original CD Key label is still attached to the laptop. Once reinstalled we will usually restore the drivers and add a virus checker.
