What are your hours?

When can I come to your repair centre?

We are open from 10am – 4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 10am to 2pm on Wednesdays. We are closed Saturday and Sunday. We do not have appointments, so you can just walk in anytime we are open so we can take a look at your device!

How long does getting an estimate on what cost of repair take?

This depends on your issue. We can usually give you an estimate while you wait, unless you have liquid damage, in which case you would have to leave it for an estimate.

Do you only repair Apple products?

Yes and no.

We can work on any PC or Windows based laptop. Michael Searle, the director of MJS, has over 25 years of experience and has repaired countless virus infestations, faulty hardware and many other common issues. In fact, all our staff are experienced technicians, not salesman who are trying to sell you a new computer for the sake of it. If it can be economically repaired, we'll do our best.

The problem arises with mobile phone repair. It is feasible to stock most Apple  parts that we need, but not practical to stock every single mobile phone part there is. There are too many models. The main problem is the price of screens - mainly Samsung. Most of the newer Samsung phone screens are well over £200, that's before we charge anything for labour.  If we feel we’re not the best fit for your issue, we will refer you to someone who is.

Doesn’t a lack of certification mean you have no idea what you’re doing, or that my repair has a chance of premature failure?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! To be an Apple certified warranty repair centre, to the point that repairs are 100% officially covered under an Apple warranty, the service centre must buy their parts from Apple. This means that Apple themselves set the prices of parts, which results in unnecessarily expensive repairs. In order to make a profit, a repair shop must set a very high price for any given service. I am sure some of you who have been to Stormfront or Apple and have heard “your machine is out of warranty, so it will be £750 for a new logic board.” or "Sorry, its over 5 years old so its classed as vintage"...?

Apple do not manufacture parts they resell to repair shops. Apple sell the parts to a service centre for 3-6 times its actual cost, which is the reason Apple Authorized service centres are so expensive. Apple know that customers prefer shops that are "Apple authorised service centres." It has little to do with getting you better service or a better repair.

Because MJS offer component level board repair, we can offer our customers a much more economic fix. For example, it is much cheaper for us to replace a faulty capacitor or a backlight fuse than replacing a perfectly repairable logic board with a new one!

More and more of Apples new range of MacBooks have no interchangeable parts. You can't add more ram memory, upgrade the SSD etc - they are presoldered to the motherboard and you are stuck with whatever specification you got at the time of purchase. If a customer has spilled liquid onto their computer, rendering it unusable unless the motherboard is repaired, they can kiss their important data goodbye. Replacing the logic board will not bring it back. A quality repair by experienced technician will.

We never say that a 3 - 5 year old iMac is "vintage!"

How do you take payment?

We accept payment via debit or credit cards, bank transfer and cash. You will also receive a receipt or invoice for work that has been carried out.

What does it cost for you to look at my Mac?

NOTHING! We feel diagnostic fees are predatory in the laptop repair industry and do not charge them.

Should I wait for my Macbook to dry out before bringing it to you? Maybe it will "just work" again?

No! It is the mineral deposits that are left behind after the computer has dried out that cause corrosion. It may well "spring back to life" but the joy will be short lived.

Are you Apple certified?

Absolutely not. Being Apple certified would tie our hands to the point where even replacing a fuse on a logic board would not be possible. Being Apple authorised would mean we would have to charge you £700 - £1200 to replace your motherboard because of that one component!

But doesn’t Apple rigorously test those parts to ensure quality?

No.Have you ever wondered what “Apple Authorised” means? You might assume this makes it a better part, but they’re the same parts as we purchase. There are website forums such as "macrumors" that prove that Apple has no real high tech process to weed out displays with issues such as dead pixels, as a lot of people receive displays with them. Look up the issues with the LG display on 15″ Retinas. or "Staingate"

At MJS Computers, we test parts the old fashioned way, by plugging them in before using them. The personal touch can’t be beat.

How will your repair affect my warranty?

Anyone who isn’t a fully Apple authorised warranty repair facility is technically voiding your warranty.

However, in reality, most items that come into ourselves for repair are either out of warranty or the customer, by breaking the screen of their iPhone or iPad, or by spilling a pint all over their MacBook, have invalidated their warranty anyway.

If you have liquid damaged your laptop and are having us repair your logic board, you will likely be laughed at by the Genius Bar if you ever return for a warranty issue. The methods we use to repair corroded circuit boards are highly reliable and effective.
